Luxury Bathrooms

All bathrooms have been lovingly restored, with great lighting and modern fittings. Some have baths, so if its raining, soak away as the tanks fill up..

Stand up paddle boarding from across the road
Maggie stand up paddle boarding launching from across the road!

What's on the doorstep..

The Kaipara is a beautiful region, spreading from Mangawhai to The West Coast and the Kauri Forests, with Paparoa being in the centre. There are plenty of things to do nearby from the Saturday Farmers market to Museums, fishing, SUP (stand up paddle boarding) and kayaking and walks.

Pahi is very close, with a pier, and one of the largest Morton Bay Fig trees in the Southern hemisphere. Very pretty for a picnic in the summer or a paddle.

Museums - The Kauri Museum

Bloody awesome Museum! Only 5 minutes drive away it's really the history of the settlers and the Pioneers around the area. Stay at Pheasant Lodge, and then visit the centre, and you will really understand how they built such magnificent homesteads in the area, and how it developed.

Dining out - The Ladys Mile

Best Fresh Snapper and chips for miles, you have never tasted fish so yummy!

Antiques at Quince Cottage Collectables

Pop next door to 1 Franklin Road for 5 rooms of Antiques, upcycled clothing, a natural perfumery, gifts,Crown Lynn pottery, Art glass, and small furniture pieces. Its not to be missed (but then we own it, so a bit of bias, and we have a key if they are not open)..

Walks/Cycle tracks

The Kauri loop walk starts across the road and takes you along the river, and up to ancient Kauri Forest and Kumara Pits. Well maintained by the Paparoa Lions Club its an all weather 1.5 hour track well worth doing. Further along at Ruawai are Stock bank cycle tracks, and road tracks from Matakohe.

As wonderful as this late 19th Century, historic-registered house is, the best thing about Pheasant Lodge are the owners, Tony and Maggie. They are great cooks – the breakfast stacker is to die for – but they are even better and more fascinating people. They have both lead interesting lives and have lived and been all over the world. They couldn’t be nicer. Tony has restored this historic house and has furnished it with antiques he has collected throughout his life, plus others bought specifically for it. The dining room is elegant; you feel like you are in a BBC period piece. The bedrooms are nicely sized and comfortable. Contrasting with all of the antiques, the bathroom fixtures are sleek, modern and top-of-the-line. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. The grapevine covered arbor and the jasmine covered deck offer most-pleasant outdoor seating. We had a wonderful stay at Pheasant Lodge, and would happily return if we are ever in the area again.

Tony and Maggie went above and beyond to ensure we had a special and memorable wedding experience! They treated us like royalty and nothing at all was a problem! The ambience of the house is non comparable to anywhere else I’ve stayed before, I could have stayed there for weeks and not taken in all the unique intricacies of the decor. We had everything we could have wanted and they catered for our every need. Thank you so very much! Wonderful hosts, wonderful people, wonderful experience. Can’t recommend more highly!

Thank you for a lovely weekend in Pheasant Lodge after doing the Kaipara Cruise from Pahi. The house is full of intriguing treasures from the past and warm ambience made it a memorable stay. Freshly cooked breakfast was delicious prepared by Maggie and Tony. Located in the centre of Paparoa village and is close to the Kaipara Harbour, Auckland and Northland it was fabulous get away.
